From Monza Misery to Brazilian Brilliance: Max Opens Up about His Toughest Title
Max Verstappen, now a four-time Formula 1 World Champion, opens up in an exclusive interview with Lawrence Barretto about what he calls his most challenging season to date. Reflecting on a year marked by fierce competition, unexpected struggles, and critical turning points, the Dutch driver shares insights into the highs and lows that defined his journey to the top. From the early-season pressures that left him questioning his chances, to the game-changing win in Brazil that reignited his title charge, Verstappen takes us inside the mind of a champion. Beyond the track, he discusses the importance of balance, the role his family has played in his career, and his vision for life after racing. It’s a revealing and personal conversation with one of the most dominant forces in motorsport today.
"I put a lot of pressure on myself naturally—I always want to deliver my best. When things got tough, I focused on staying calm and extracting the most from each situation. I don’t talk to a lot of people about these things; I work through them in my head, which might not work for everyone, but it does for me."
Max, congratulations on becoming a four-time World Champion. What are the emotions running through you right now?
Max Verstappen: Thank you! It’s a mix of emotions, really. It’s been such a long and tough season—lots of highs, lots of lows. We had to stick together as a team through some really challenging moments, but we stayed calm and focused on the end goal. Last season might have been more enjoyable in terms of dominance, but this one feels particularly special because of the difficulties we faced. It’s a testament to the team and everyone’s hard work.
There was a lot of pressure this year with challenges from McLaren and others. How did you handle that?
Max: I put a lot of pressure on myself naturally—I always want to deliver my best. When things got tough, I focused on staying calm and extracting the most from each situation. I don’t talk to a lot of people about these things; I work through them in my head, which might not work for everyone, but it does for me. Around Monza, it felt like the championship was slipping away, but once we understood the car’s issues and made changes, things turned around.
Was there a specific moment when you thought, "This championship is mine"?
Max: Brazil. When it rained and I won from P17, that was the turning point. I knew after that race it was sealed unless something major went wrong—and thankfully, it didn’t. That race gave me so much confidence and really shifted the momentum.
How do you maintain balance and stay grounded through all of this?
Max: It’s crucial to switch off from Formula 1. When I’m home, I focus on other things—family, sim racing, and just enjoying life. If I thought about F1 every day, I’d burn out. This balance keeps me sharp and ensures I don’t lose the passion for racing. Family is especially important; they’ve sacrificed so much for me, and I want to give back to them as much as I can.
Speaking of family, have you had a chance to speak with them after this win?
Max: Not yet! It’s been so busy, but I’ll call my mom and sister soon. They’ve been a huge part of this journey, and I’m incredibly grateful for their support.
You’ve had a fierce rivalry with Lando Norris this season. How has that dynamic been between being rivals and friends?
Max: It’s been great. Lando and I have mutual respect. We’re friends, though not best friends—we each have our own close circles. I’ve always told him his time will come, and he’s had an incredible season. Of course, the media likes to stir things up sometimes, but we’ve managed to keep it respectful both on and off the track.
Lando mentioned you don’t seem to have any weaknesses. Do you feel you’re at the top of your game right now?
Max: I wouldn’t admit to weaknesses even if I had them! (Laughs) But I’m always looking to improve. It’s not just about one great performance but maintaining a high level throughout the season. That consistency is what makes the difference.
Winning four consecutive titles puts you alongside legendary names. How does that feel?
Max: It’s incredible. Coming from a small country like the Netherlands, it’s amazing to think about what we’ve achieved. I hope this inspires young kids back home to believe that anything is possible. For me, it’s about enjoying the moment and continuing to push myself.
Looking ahead, do you see yourself chasing eight titles to surpass the record?
Max: Winning eight titles would be amazing, but it’s not my ultimate goal. There’s so much more I want to do in life beyond racing. Spending time with family, enjoying life, and pursuing other passions are equally important. You only live once, and I want to make the most of it.
Any plans to celebrate tonight?
Max: Definitely! I’ve got a few friends around, so we’ll find a spot to celebrate properly. It’s been a long year, and I think we’ve earned it.
Max, congratulations again, and thank you for your time.
Max: Thanks, Lawrence. Appreciate it!
And just like that, Max Verstappen caps off another extraordinary season as one of Formula 1’s all-time greats.
